Every family dreams of an education that shapes, challenges, and prepares their children for the world ahead. Enter Tiffany, a passionate mother who, along with her children Diego and Soli, embarked on a transformative journey with The Socratic Experience (TSE). In our latest interview, Tiffany shares her perspective on their unique experiences, the power of questions, and the incredible impact of TSE on their lives.
Family Insights from the Interview:
As a mother, Tiffany sheds light on her hopes, fears, and the profound changes she witnessed in both Diego and Soli. She emphasizes how TSE nurtured their natural curiosity and fostered growth beyond the classroom.
The family’s home environment began to mirror this Socratic method. Dinner table conversations transitioned from mundane to discussions about law, philosophy, and science.
“I don’t think they’d ever say, ‘My teacher told me…’” Tiffany recounts. “Instead they’d say, ‘Have you ever heard of…?’”
“The word ‘autodidact’ has entered our home,” Tiffany adds.
Diego’s Transformation: Once a student lost in the traditional system, discover how our online school reignited Diego’s passion for learning, pushing him to explore topics he never imagined. Diego started 10th grade at a large public high school but quickly felt stifled and unrecognized. The environment was so oppressive that he couldn’t even share a traditional first-day lunch with his father without jumping through bureaucratic hoops.
On that first and only day of public high school, one of the teachers posed the question to the class, “Who here is excited to learn?” Diego was embarrassed to be the only student who raised his hand. Students and teachers alike already felt defeated.
Kudos to him for leaving.
TSE promoted autonomy in learning. In contrast to his 3500 student public high school, at our online school, he was valued, acknowledged, and most importantly, happy. This newfound freedom in learning even led him to an apprenticeship in Roatan, Honduras at Prospera Global, working alongside accomplished adults in a reputable company at just 16 years of age. He was able to give him a semester of high school credit for the internship, which was an amazing experience. Diego is having a blast designing an education that works for him.
Soli’s Blossoming: Witness the story of a young learner finding her voice. Soli’s journey at TSE exemplifies the power of inquiry-based learning, turning timid curiosity into confident exploration. Soli, inspired to learn Spanish at TSE, ignited her mother’s interest in the language. Now, Soli envisions learning multiple languages, including Japanese, Chinese, and French. Going into 7th grade this year, Soli is striving to finish 8th grade in the same year.
Describes Tiffany: “[Soli] has become more articulate. She asks me not to share how old she is. She knows they’re going to guess something older than 12 years old simply because of how she carries herself and the confidence she has.
“She’s willing to meet somebody, and have a conversation with them about ideas and hopes and dreams.”
Why This Story Matters
Tiffany, Diego, and Soli’s story is more than just a testament to TSE’s impact. Traditional school fails most students because its basic premises – state mandates and top-down curricula – are inherently flawed.
TSE is a beacon for families everywhere, showcasing what education can achieve when it’s centered around the student. Through their experiences, we see a blueprint for nurturing a love for learning, fostering critical thinking, and championing personal growth.
